About Santuario Ajolote · Axolot Finder
We unite science, technology and community to rescue the Mexican axolotl and restore its habitat in Xochimilco.
Santuario Ajolote · Axolot Finder is a comprehensive conservation platform dedicated to the rescue of the Mexican axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), an endemic species of Mexico in critical danger of extinction. Our mission is to protect the biodiversity of the Xochimilco wetlands, a cultural and natural heritage of humanity recognized by UNESCO, through the combination of citizen science, genetic research, environmental monitoring and responsible community tourism.
The platform is designed for multiple audiences: citizens who want to report sightings or environmental complaints, researchers and academics who contribute scientific publications, volunteers and brigade members who participate in on-site restoration tasks, chinamperos and cooperatives working on chinampa recovery, and responsible tourists seeking authentic experiences that support conservation. Every user, from citizen to scientist, finds tools to contribute to the rescue of the axolotl and its ecosystem.
Santuario Ajolote is built and operated by the Comunidad Independiente de Manejo Ambiental (CIMA A.C.), a civil society organization based in Xochimilco. We work in alliance with universities, government institutions such as SEMARNAT, CONAGUA and PROFEPA, international organizations such as UNESCO and the Ramsar Convention, and above all with the chinampera communities that have cared for these wetlands for over a thousand years. Our approach combines ancestral knowledge with modern technology to ensure that the Mexican axolotl and its habitat have a future.
